- How are birds’ songs shaped by their diets?
- What does all this have to do with bird evolution?

Dr. Jeff Podos is a Professor in the Department of Biology at UMass. His research focuses on vocal behavior and evolution in songbirds, and he has active research projects in the US, Ecuador, and Brazil. Click on the “research” tab above to read more about lab activities and interests. Most every fall Jeff teaches an upper-level majors class in Animal Behavior, and in spring semesters he teaches a class on Writing in Biology. For almost two decades he co-taught a non-majors, general education course on the Biology of Social Issues. From 2011-2018, Jeff served as Graduate Program Director and Leader for the Organismic and Evolutionary Biology (OEB) graduate program. He is presently executive co-editor for Advances in the Study of Behavior, and editor for Behavioral Ecology & Sociobiology. Jeff has served twice on the Executive Committee of the Animal Behavior Society, including a stint as society President in 2017-18.

Wired to Want: How the Brain Drives Reward and Motivation

  • What is dopamine and what role does it play in reward and motivation?

  • How do psychoactive drugs affect reward processing in the brain?

Dr. Shivon Robinson is an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at Williams College. She received her bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Psychology from Williams College in 2011. She completed her graduate work in the lab of Irwin Lucki at the University of Pennsylvania and earned her doctorate in Neuroscience from the University of Pennsylvania in 2016. Subsequently, she completed an NIH-sponsored Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award (IRACDA) postdoctoral fellowship in the lab of Julie Blendy, which combined a traditional mentored research experience with extensive training in college-level teaching. Her research interests include microdialysis, nucleus accumbens, behavioral neuroscience, behavioral testing, behavioral pharmacology, neuropharmacology, behavioral analysis, rodent stereotaxic surgery, behavioral experiments, and novel object recognition.

The Algorithmics of Fair Resource Allocation

  • What is envy-freeness?

Yair Zick is an Assistant professor at the College of Information Systems and Computer Sciences, UMass Amherst. Prior to that, he was an assistant professor at the NUS School of Computing. He obtained his PhD (mathematics) from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 2014, and a B.Sc (mathematics, “Amirim” honors program) from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research interests include computational fair division, computational social choice, algorithmic game theory and algorithmic transparency. He is the recipient of the 2011 AAMAS Best Student Paper award, the 2014 Victor Lesser IFAAMAS Distinguished Dissertation award, the 2016 ACM EC Best Paper award, and the 2017 Singapore NRF Fellowship. He is mainly interested in game theory, fair division, strategic collaborative behavior, and their applications in various domains. Professor Zick is also interested in algorithmic transparency, and ethics in AI/ML.

Dance to the live band Ch’CHUNK from 6:30-9:30.

ch'CHUNK! is a band located in Western Massachusetts that is a modern take on classic swing. They perform classics as well as originals. The name ch'CHUNK! was derived from the sound and type of strumming associated with various types of swing music. They are happy to have found that their shows are enjoyed by an audience of many generations. 

Band members are Jack Dwyer on guitar and vocals, Ian Hamel on tenor guitar and vocals, Hannah Elliot on clarinet and vocals, Karim Sumun on bass guitar, Chris Trevethan on drums and washboard, and Jim Rutter on tenor banjo and mandolin.

Drop-in and bring your own yoga mat. Brian is a certified 200 hour yoga instructor who studied under Kim Valerie’s Iyengar based Yoga Spirits out of Beverly, MA. He’s also certified to teach chair yoga, having studied under Lakshmi Voelker’s Get Fit Where You Sit program. Lakshmi has trained over 1600 Chair yoga instructors and trains out of Kripalu.
